Roy, a 6-footer, stands on the top of a 40-foot flagpole at the same time that a 4-foot child on the ground casts a shadow of length 4/5 feet.
= (4/5[6 + 40])/4 - 40/46([4/5{6 + 40}]/4)
= (4/5[46])/4 - 20/23([4/5{46}]/4)
= 36.8/4 - 20/23(36.8/4)
= 9.2 - 20/23(9.2)
= 9.2 - 8
= 1.2
Answer: 1.2 feet is the difference between the shadow of Roy and the flagpole together and the flagpole alone.
