Sewn Applique
Need help with applique....?
I am wanting to put appliques on some shirts for my little ones. I have the shape cut out but am lost at how to apply it. I have lots of stitches to choose from on my sewing machine. It is so hard to turn the corners and it looks messy. Any advice would be appreciated.
To correctly apply applique, you must turn under a seam allowance and sew with either a blanket stitch or zig zag stitch. Eleanor Burns has a neat way to 'cheat' your appliques using fusible interfacing. When I started doing applique, I did a simple, short straight (or zig zag) stitch 1/8 - 1/4 inch inside the edge, and let the edges fray. Everyone thought it looked great and I didnt have to worry so much about doing 'perfect' applique until I got the hang of going around shapes correctly.

How to Applique : Setting Up to Sew Applique
Applique T-shirts?
This summer I want to start a craft project - taking plain, colourful t-shirts and put little applique desings on them, a bit like the style of Crafty couture in the top picture..

I was thinking of taking felt or other materials and make them into a design, then sew them onto a t-shirt?

I went to see your example and the link didn't work. Please re-check and/or re-post.
Added: I think felt would be too heavy for the appliques, especially on the bottom tanktop. To me, these look like raw-edged applique with just plain cotton fabric. although they could be turned-edge. On the dress, the pockets are appliqued and decorated before the pockets are attached.
Here's some links to different ways to do applique. See which ones seem close to the look you want. For a first project, do one with just a few pieces, especially if you use fusible, because it affects the stretch of knits. Hope this gets you started.
