What are my skis worth?
Hi. I have a set of skis poles and boots we found in a closet in our new home in Chattanooga, TN. I want to sell them but also (obviously) want to get a fair price for them as well. The poles are scratched up at the tips, but the skis and boots look barely used at all. These are made for a petite woman. The poles say "TECNOpro" on them, and I think the size is 44" (it is very faded.) The skis say "Sport DYNASTAR" on them, and the only other defining mark on top is "S137" on the boot clips. The edges of both skis say "V 140 7351268", and I am guessing that is a serial number of some sort. The boots are size USA 7, EURO 6, and say "DALBELLO" on the side, as well as "CARVEX" and "M39X". Near the heal, there is "286 MM", and on the back of the ankle there is "MATRIX Diva DESIGN". FYI, these will eventually be going on craigslist here in Chattanooga and also down in Atlanta. Thank you!
--Doug K
It will be difficult to answer your question without any knowledge of the year of the ski. Dynastars, brand new, top of the line, go for about $1500. The numbers on the side refer to the size - V 140 means that it is 140 centimeters long, which is about the right size for a woman about 5 feet tall...IF they are shaped skis. The best you can probably get with those skis, as long as they are tuned and stuff, is $100. They sound used, which brings the value down alot, plus the bindings are already on them, which also detracts from the price alot, since the bindings sound like, to me, to be non-adjustable.
The boots are a decent brand, Dalbello, but the boot is probably worth $25. If they are the ones I am thinking about (pink and white?), then you will have issues finding someone to buy them. Those boots, to be honest, had alot of issues with the buckles. My sister had a pair and it lasted her a single season.
The poles, regardless of what brand they are, will probably be able to be sold for $5 or less. They sound like they are in bad condition, and the only taker would be someone who desperately needs poles. People prefer clear, bright poles - if you are ever injured skiing, the poles make for a great marker to the uphill skiers.
I'd say the total cost for your find may be in the $150 range. Best way to know? Bring them to a local ski store and see what they say. They can tell you what year the skis are, and how much they generally go for. They can also tune them for you.

How will America survive as a consumer country when there is no money?
Wal Mart sells Chinese products. Will this stimulus plan even work? It's meant to buy a bunch of pork to put money back into business, but since American industry is crashing isn't that money just going to China? We buy buy buy, but don't sell anything but our military.
Chinese car sales are up above American car sales.
There are a higher percentage of Wal Mart employees eligible for government benefits than any other American company. Wal Mart is America's top dog employer.
America had to fight with Wal Mart to make them sell Made in America American flags.
The biggest retailer in the US puts more money in the Asian market than in the American.
Blame Obama? He voted present.
Sounds like you are on a WalMart rant. Bottom line, if people hadn't been greedy and so consumer oriented we wouldn't be in this mess. Go back to the 80's and the Wall Street Movie where Greed is Good was the mantra. No one forced us into homes we couldn't afford or cars or vacations at 20 years old that used to be something we worked for. I'm not saying Walmart is right here, but we as a country, wanted less expensive on necessities while people making 20,000 a year were driving BMW's and Lexus and all blinged out. Walmart just filled a need. We need to look at our morals and why we felt the need to have bigger, bigger and better -- look at pictures of hip hop stars and their entourages and the huge diamond earrings and crosses and SUV's that every kid wanted to emulate -- The question is how can we get back to basics?

Is the Canon 50D worth the extra money?
Currently I have a Canon Rebe XT (8 Mega-pixel). I want to upgrade to either a 40D or 50D. I have made large 20x30 prints and they have come out fine with the rebel, but I want more resolution to work with(cropping, detail, etc) I am considering making a business out of this, so I looking for a more pro-style body. I will also in the next couple of weeks be getting a "L" Canon Glass. So I'm wondering is the extra 5 mega pixels on the 50D worth the $$? or would I be good getting the 40D with an L glass?
If you have the extra money to spend maybe. But the 40D is a great camera, and at the price it is now its a steal. I wouldnt buy the 50D for the 5 extra mps. If you are cropping so much that you need 15mp then maybe take some of that L glass money and get a longer lens. Try to frame your pictures to avoid cropping. Id rather save the extra few hundred and get a 40D. Or spend some more and get a used 1D mark IIN or something. To me the 50D just doesnt seem worth it. Imo it was really pretty useless for Canon to bring that out as a bridge sports/journalism camera between the 40D and the 1D mark III. Now if Canon would bring something to match Nikons D300, that would be worth the extra money.

Retail Detail $8.78 Atlanta's Untied States, led by the duo of Colin Arnstein and Skip Engelbrecht, joined by the rhythm section of Andy Jones (bass) and Wade Page (drums/percussion), turn in their second full-length release, Retail Detail, which furthers the band's explorations into the juxtaposition of straight rock playing and extreme experimentation. Untied States are the kind of group that can play somewhat conventional rock in a style that recalls Gang of Four, full of jagged guitar lines, driving rhythms, and harshly sung, minimally melodic vocals. But the bandmembers are only partially interested in such structures, and at any given moment one of their songs may break down or change gears suddenly, with tempos dropping or disappearing entirely and various keyboard sounds and noises replacing the established patterns. Like the Velvet Underground and the Mothers of Invention, Untied States want to explode the usual notions of what constitutes rock and, indeed, music itself. At times, the listener feels that the sonic ideas of John Cage have overtaken the band and that one is hearing not so much music in the accepted sense as loosely organized sound created in a partially unplanned fashion. The result is an album that is often jarring, but never dull. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Colin Arnstein - Sampling, Double Bass, Bass, Piano, Drums, Vocals, Guitar; Skip Engelbrecht - Noise, Sampling, Guitar, Keyboards, Drums |

Fine Lines $6.38 Robbers on High Street deliver a crunchy set of genuine rock & roll spirit on their debut EP, Fine Lines. The New York foursome refrain from going for that fashion-slick city sound made popular in the new millennium by the likes of the Strokes and Interpol. Honestly, Fine Lines is a solid record because the band is tight enough to pull it off without anything other than what they're offering: cinematic lyrics soaked in surefire guitar licks from frontman Ben Trokan and Steven Mercado. Bassist Jeremy Phillips and drummer Tomer Danan accentuate Fine Lines' elasticity, therefore suggesting that Robbers on High Street are confident in their craft. Don't quickly dismiss it as cockiness. Fine Lines is based more on an imaginative desire to formulate, carefully and correctly, a design that's fresh. Songs such as the majestic horn-laden "A Night at Star Castle" and "Debonair"'s dark pop flair succeed in that. "Hot Sluts (Say I Love You)" is their most glossy post-punk moment; however, it doesn't revel in it for too long. Trokan's slight vocal gravel on this album standout is much too romantic for it to fall culprit to formulated swagger. Like Longwave did with The Strangest Things, Robbers on High Street master their approach in getting a "full" rock & roll sound on Fine Lines. Talk about the passion. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi Performers: Jeremy Phillips - Bass; Steven Mercado - Drums; Tomer Danan - Drums |

Between the Lines $14.39 Pitched somewhere between Sloan, the Apples in Stereo, and Club 8, France's Sweet Apple Pie provide a sound much like their name: warm, sweet, and wholesome. Between the Lines is their second album, and it is a huge step forward from their first. In fact, it is one of the better indie pop records you will hear in 2004. The songwriting is tight, the arrangements are fully realized, and the group vocals are large and lush, sometimes coming close to Polyphonic Spree proportions. Songs like "Harder Than We Thought," "Pray Before," and "Oyster" reflect a '70s influence, sometimes sounding like Squeeze, sometimes like a more flexible ABBA. Always sounding good and hooky, Between the Lines is full of laid-back charm; it's the kind of record that radiates warmth from beginning to end. Playing it is like hanging out with the kind of friend with whom you don't have to say anything; you just have to be there. Add Sweet Apple Pie to the list of bands making adult pop (Walker Kong, the Heavy Blinkers, Young and Sexy) drawn from the '70s and '80s but sounding completely modern and completely fabulous. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi |

Menza Lines $12.78 Team a major arranger (Don Menza) with some of Los Angeles' top musicians and superior straight-ahead material and the result is a memorable big band recording. Many of the selections heard on this live date are based on familiar chord changes, with "Gravy" being better known as "Walkin'," "Faviana" actually being a disguised "Stella by Starlight," and "Time to Leave" being based on "After You've Gone." The arrangements are always swinging and full of surprises, and the many soloists include Menza on tenor (showcased on a rare instrumental version of "Nina Never Knew"), trombonists Bob McChesney and Alex Iles, trumpeter Don Rader, altoist Lanny Morgan on "Hark the Harold," and trumpeter Bobby Shew on "Prelude to a Kiss." Every selection is fun to hear, making one wish that Don Menza would lead many more big band sets in the future. At least one can be grateful for this gem. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Doug Webb - Reeds; Jack Nimitz - Reeds; Lanny Morgan - Reeds; Russ D'Alba - Reeds; Tom Peterson - Reeds; Alexander Iles - Trombone; Bill Reichenbach Jr. - Trombone; Bob McChesney - Trombone; Bobby Shew - Trumpet; Chris Conner - Bass, Gu |
