How can I indirectly measure a flagpole?
My math assignment is to measure a real flagpole in front of my school using four methods, not one of them being to take a tape measure and directly measure it.
I've already got two methods of measuring, but they were instructed to us. I made a hypsometer and a stadioscope with common household materials. The next two methods have to be thought up, they are not told to us.
Basically, I'm supposed to use similar triangles to find the height. Approximate height is okay, too.
Try tying a string to the top of the flag, raising it. With the string taut lay it on the ground at any distance from the base of the pole. Now measure the length of the string, the distance from the base of the pole to where the string touches the ground, last use a protractor to measure the angle between the string and the ground. Using those three measurements, compute using sin, cosine, or tangent to get your answer. (the length of your string is your hypotenuse)

How to work out length of a flagpole?
A flagpole is 13 cm in diameter and a perfect cylinder. If one end of a 2300 cm long string is attached to the top of the flagpole, and wraps around the flagpole exactly 16 times before ending at the bottom of the flagpole, how tall is the flagpole?
What is the answer to the nearest centimetre?

I think Alex got it wrong.
The string is wrapped around the pole 16 times. There is got to be some thickness of the string, which will move each successive 'round' of string to move down the pole. Since the diameter of the pole is 13 cm, the string of diameter 'd' is wrapped around, making the effective diameter of the wrapped pole as 13+2d.
The length of string for once circling the pole would be for the mean circumference of this pole + string, which would be (13+d)pi. It would not be 13+2d because the inner edge of the string would be having teh same dia as the pole, whereas the outer edge would be 13+2d. Hence mean would be 13+d.
Length of pole would be 16d.
Now according to the question, 16(13+d)pi=2300 [ please check the figures. This is because the string appears to be ridiculously thick)
This gives d=32.75 cm, and the pole height as 16x32.75 = 524 cm.
This height appears to be ok for a flagpole.
