2. Sally travels by car from one city to another. She drives for 30.0 min at 80.0 km/h, 12.0 min at 105 km/h, and 45.0 min at 40.0km/h, and she spends 15.0 min eating luch and buying gas.

b) determine the total distance traveled.

3. Runner A is initially 6.0 km west of a flagpole and is running with a constant velocity of 9.0 km/h due east. Runner B s initially 5.0 km east of the flagpole and is running with a constant vvelocity of 8.0 km/h due west. What will be the distance of the two runners from the flagpole when their pths cross?(its not nec. to convert ans. from kilo to meters)

1. You need to convert the time into a single unit. Since the speed is given in m/s, it makes sense to use seconds.
2h,9min, 21 sec = (2 + 3600) + (9 * 60) + 21 = 7761 s

Now D = VT
D = distance
V = velocity (or speed in this case)
T = time

D = 5.436 m/s * 7761 s = 42188.796 m
Convert to km and you get 42.188796 km
Now apply significant figures and you get 42.18 km

They only have 3 significant figures in their answer, but it looks to me like there should be 4.

Physics bonus problems?

I already know that average velocity is the displacement over time, and I know what constant velocity is, I just don't know how to apply them to problem #1 without distance given.

1. Emily takes a trip. She drives at a constant velocity of 89.5 km/hr except for a 22.0 min "pit" stop. If her average velocity is 77.8 km/hr, how long did the entire trip take?

2. Bob is initially 6.0 km west of the flag pole and running at a constant 2.5 m/s due east. John is 5.0 km east of the same flagpole and runs at 2.2 m/s due west. Where are the two runners when they meet?

1. Lets say she drove for time T and stopped for 22 mins.
Lets say she covers a total distance D.

Then average velocity = 77.8 = D / (T + 22/60)
Also, since the distance covered is only applicable to when she is driving, we have one more equation for D.

D = 89.5 * T

You have two equations. Eliminate D and find T.

In your case,

89.5 T = 77.8 x (T + 22/60)
=> 89.5T = 77.8T + 28.53
=> T = 2.44 hours

2. Lets say both meet after time T.
Bob would have covered distance D1 = 2.5*T
John covers distance D2 = 2.2*T

At this point, both have met so they have covered a total distance equal to the initial distance between them, i..e 11 kms or 11000 meters

So, D1 + D2 = 11000
=> 2.5T + 2.2T = 11000
=> 4.7T = 11000
=> T = 2340 seconds

D1 = 2.5*2340 = 5850 meters = 5.8 kms => So Bob is 0.2 kms west of the flag pole and thats where they meet.

Each pole has three sections and is secured at the desired height by twisting the upper sections in a clockwise direction.
